Anthony Gordon died on August 22, 2015 while he was in custody of the Arlington County Police Department, police said. It has been determined that Gordon died of natural causes due to an extensive history of medical issues, authorities stated.

The man was found unconscious in a medical unit cell in the early hours of August 22. Resuscitation efforts were made by deputies and nurses before he was taken to the Virginia Hospital Center. He died at around 3:31 a.m.

Police said Gordon was convicted of a third offense of assault and battery of a family member and had been sentenced to five years.

Authorities said this was the first in-custody death since February 2013. In 2013 officials determined that the inmate had also died of natural causes.
