Showhouse veteran Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Interior Design in Bethesda, MD, www.kelleyinteriordesign.com, who has participated in 21 showhouses over the past 11 years, says it’s still exciting to be selected. “I really feel honored to be a part of this fundraising event,” Proxmire says. “Children’s National Medical Center is a very deserving organization and should hopefully receive much needed funds from the DC Design House.”

5 Ways to Decorate Your House for Less

According to the International Housewares Association, the average U.S. household spends around $614 per year on housewares. That represents a slight increase over previous years, and purchases through non-store retailing sales grew by nearly 15 percent as people increasingly made purchases online and through catalogs in an effort to save money on their household items.

“We have reached a time when people not only want and need a good deal, but are using technology to actively seek one out,” explains Braden Richter, the chief executive officer of www.LuxeYard.com (OTC BB:LUXR), an online member site that offers discounts on housewares. “The deals are certainly around, for those who take the time to seek them out.”

Occasionally Cake of Alexandria, Va. recently hired Mount Vernon, Va. native, Dana Bailey, 29, as a manager-in-training and a baker. Her favorite cup cake invention is Banana’s Foster, made with banana cake dipped in dulce de leche with rum butter cream icing and sprinkled with brown sugar. For more information on Occasionally Cake, call 703-780-CAKE or visit www.occasionallycake.com.

Bailey is a recent graduate of Stratford University in Woodbridge, Va. with a degree in baking and pastry. Although she spent the past 10 years working in government administration, Bailey knew her ‘calling’ was to be in the kitchen creating and designing cakes. When she’s not whipping up a new cupcake flavor, she enjoys reading and listening to music.

5 Reasons Spray-On Tans are Better

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the country. Furthermore, around 90 percent of all skin cancer cases are associated with exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Today, the spray-on tan option is increasingly offering many benefits over other forms of tanning.

“Many people are not familiar with the type of spray-on tan that we offer,” explains Meghan Farrar, owner of Golden Glow Mobile Spray Tan (www.goldenglowtansva.com), located in NoVa. “Those who do know and opt for it find out just what a great-looking tan they can get, and how much better it is than sunbathing or being exposed to UV tanning booths.”

Spray-on tans provide many benefits, compared to other forms of tanning, including:
