Because It's Good Pho You (and Delicious!)

Because It's Good Pho You (and Delicious!)

Pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup that is usually served with beef or chicken, has become increasingly popular. Today I had lunch at Pho 75, which is located at 1721 Wilson Boulevard. The lunch crowd was bustling and I spoke to some customers. Pergrin Pervez, a Georgetown resident and regular Pho eater stopped by Pho 75 for his lunch today. “I eat Pho a lot, but I usually do on the weekends. It’s a great hangover food and also great when you’re sick. I think it has a lot of healing qualities,” said Pervez.

New Healthy Eatery to Open in Clarendon

New Healthy Eatery to Open in Clarendon

South Block Blends will open its doors in Arlington this upcoming summer and offer customers a unique combination of grub: burritos and smoothies. Amir Mostafavi, the owner, said, “South Block Blends will offer “West Coast Style” fresh fruit smoothies.” What is “West Coast Style?” I am from San Diego, and I was even stumped. Mostafavi says, “This means natural ingredients and no sugar or sweeteners added!”

For the last 8 years, Mostafavi has had a store on the George Washington University Campus in Foggy Bottom.  “I love smoothies and I wanted to pair them with another food that people love, burritos! But, I wanted to give the burritos a healthy spin to complement my smoothies,” said Mostafavi. The burritos are kept healthy by using whole-wheat tortillas, brown rice and low-fat cheese.

With Some Businesses Down, Tackle Box in Georgetown Continues To Grow

With Some Businesses Down, Tackle Box in Georgetown Continues To Grow

While many financial analysts are saying that the economy is on the way up, residue of the recession is still reflected all over Washington…even in Georgetown.

On the neighborhood’s posh M Street strip, sprinkled here and there between high-end boutiques and Zagat-rated restaurants, are the unfamiliar sights of boarded-up storefronts.

The past few years have been an adjustment period for many Georgetown businesses, realizing that in hard times members of society often abandon what they want to give themselves the ability to afford what they need.  Some shops in the Georgetown community have fallen victim to this shift; others have managed to stay above water.  And then there’s Jonathan Umble and his fish shack Tackle Box---who are expanding.

Where Will You Watch The Big Game Sunday?

Where Will You Watch The Big Game Sunday?

One thing Arlington is not lacking is a variety of sports bars. With Super Bowl Sunday less than a week away, I am sure you are deciding where you are going to watch the big game. There is Carpool, Bailey's, Union Jacks, Rock Bottom, First Down, Whitlows, Summers, Mr. Days, Ragtime, Velocity Five, Crystal City Sports Bar and more. Or maybe you are planning to throw a party at your own house or apartment.

This week I will be featuring a different sports bar in the Arlington area to tell you about some of the specials they are having and some reasons you should watch the game there. Today, Union Jack's manager Lindsey Harrison said, "It would be wise to reserve a sport for a good view of the big screen." She said they are expecting a pretty large crowd. Union Jack's will be offering $3.00 Miller Lites and $7.00 brats or hot dogs with fries.

Hard Times Cafe Brings Second Annual Wing Off

Hard Times Cafe Brings Second Annual Wing Off

Hard Times Cafe and 106.7 The Fan are proud to bring the 2011 Wing Bowl Championship to the area. There will be a total of 7 wing eating competition “Wing Offs.”

Hard Times Cafe General Manager, John Pecyncki, said this is the second year in a row for Hard Times to host this competition. All of the wings are Texas Hot Wings favor and the goal is to see who can eat the most wings in an allotted time. There are 2 rounds in the competition. The first round is to see who can eat the most wings in 10 minutes and then the top wing eaters advance to the “Wing Off” for another 4 minutes of wing eating.

“I guess they have to be used to eating large amounts of food,” said Pecyncki who thinks that people definitely practice before the competition. The winner of last year’s competition was a student from University of Maryland and did dry runs at local wing eateries.

I spoke with La Tasca Manager Mariana Pisciottano to find out more about her restaurant and current promotions.

“We opened about 4 years ago. I love this location and we have a good response from the Rockville community. All of [Rockville Town Center] was still under construction when we started. We have pretty good business, but I feel like it’s getting better and better every year. 2010 was a great year for us,” says Pisciottano.
