Go Hawaiian: It's The Bow Wow Luau

ALEXANDRIA,  Va. (WUSA) - Cue the "Hawaii 5-0" theme song and clear your calendar: canines and humans will be dressed for sunny success at Thursday's Bow Wow Luau.

The Hotel Monaco's Doggy Happy Hour will be transformed by the Canine Wingman Company into a Hawaiian-themed fundraiser on June 21 to help homeless cats and dogs at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Palm trees will sway in the background, along with hula dancers providing that island vibe for cool photo ops. (think ahead to your holiday cards: a dog in Hawaiian garb bests all those Santa-imitators!)

Dogs, in or out of costume, are encouraged to attend (cats prefer to leave the festivities to others), along with their humans (who may want to find that "Magnum, P.I."-era Hawaiian shirt.). Dozens are expected to be on hand competing for the awards for best Hawaiian costumes.

4 Animal Shelters, 1 Famous Mystery Writer, Add Up To 'Virtual Dog Show'

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  Beloved and pampered, show dogs are accustomed to life in the spotlight, accompanied by applause and blue ribbons. But shelter dogs know a different reality, which makes this week's first-ever 'virtual dog show,' called Best In Shelter, both historic and fun.

Longtime D.C. area resident, New York Times bestselling author and devoted animal supporter Martha Grimes is asking pet-lovers to cast their votes for their favorite 'man's best friend' on Father's Day weekend  (June 14-17) at www.bestinshelter.org, an organization she began a year ago to bring attention to the work of animal shelters. The virtual show is inspired by the popular Westminster Kennel Club Show which brings an annual focus to purebred dogs.

One-year-old foster pup Mocha found a forever home this week! We are so grateful to Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. and his DC staff, our first official Congressional foster office, for taking great care of Mocha and supporting our mission. We love our incredible growing team of life-saving foster volunteers!

Tom, formerly Pie
“Last summer I helped cat Pie find an adoptive family in College Park, MD. They have renamed him Tom because he looks like the 'Tom' in Tom and Jerry.  Pie quickly became friends with the couple's dog Sydney, and here are the two of them lying together on the bed.”
