Claremont Honored as Immersion School of the Year

From Arlington Public Schools:

The Education Office of the Embassy of Spain in the United States and Canada recognized Claremont Immersion Elementary School as the “2010 Colegio Del Año – School of the Year” at an awards ceremony on May 6.

Claremont was one of seven schools across the United States recognized for excellence in language education programs, specifically Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programs in English and Spanish. As part of the recognition, Claremont received $4,000 that will be used to support Spanish language instruction.

The competition, open to all public, private and charter schools in the U.S., seeks to improve student foreign language competence. Schools must also fulfill additional requirements, including implementing Spanish CLIL programs and using Spanish as an instructional learning tool at least 50 percent of the time in elementary schools.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of immersion programs in the United States. Currently there are over 500 immersion schools in the country.

Claremont Immersion Elementary School opened in September 2003 as Arlington's second dual language, Spanish/English immersion elementary school. In Claremont's K-5 dual language immersion program, children learn a second language in a natural way through everyday conversation and content instruction.
