Capital Bikeshare Rolls Out in Arlington

Capital Bikeshare launched today, September 20, in Washington D.C. and Arlington, VA. Capital Bikeshare is the newest regional transportation system and largest bikeshare system in the United States.

As of today, there are 100 stations in the District and 14 in Arlington. There are 1,100 bikes in the fleet that will be fully operating by the end of October. The concept is that anyone can pick up a bike from one of the locations and use it all over the area. Membership options range from 24 hour for $5, to 30-day for $25, to annual for $75. The first 30 minutes of each trip is free. It is environmentally friendly, healthier, and adds another option to your transportation mix.

Clarendon Day 2010

On Saturday, September 25, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. come celebrate the 13th Annual Clarendon Day! Clarendon is Arlington’s original downtown and this year there will be a full day of music, art, kids’ activities, health screenings, fitness classes and more! The event will take place rain or shine and this year it is sponsored by the Clarendon Alliance and Virginia Hospital Center Foundation. Find out what tunes, eats, shopping and fitness activities the day has to offer. 

Give Blood, Play Hockey, and Raise Funds for Inova

On Saturday, September 11, the “Give Blood, Play Hockey” event that will benefit Inova Blood Donor Services will take place at the Kettler Capitals IcePlex in Arlington County. Tickets are now on sale!

The event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the Virginia Coaching Cardinals will be up against the NCR Eagles for this second annual Charity Hockey Classic. The event will include a silent auction as well.

Lululemon Athletica in Clarendon Offers Your Weekend Fitness

Lululemon Athletica of Clarendon is offering some fun group fitness activities this weekend. On Saturday, August 28, runners of all levels are invited to join the Team Lemon Clarendon, the Lululemon community running group, at 9:00 a.m. for a run through Arlington. The run will start at end at the Lululumon store located at 2847 Clarendon Boulevard. The running group will run anywhere from 4-6 miles.

On Sunday, Lululemon of Clarendon invites you out for even more! At 7:00 p.m. the store offers a complimentary one hour long yoga class. Bring a mat if you have one, but if you don't - don’t sweat it! There are extras in the store for students to borrow. Are you training for a half marathon or a marathon for this fall? 9-11 Memorial 5K

On Saturday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m. Arlington Policemen, Firemen, Sheriff, and other individuals will participate in a 5k race in memory of 9-11. The race is limited to 3,500 participants, so be sure and secure your spot before it is too late.

The course is generally flat and includes running around parts of the Pentagon. The price to participate is $30 through September 10. Race day the price will be $35. The race begins and ends at The Crystal City Double Tree Hotel at 300 Army Navy Drive.

All runners will receive a long sleeve t-shirt, and post race festivities with awards, food, beverage, and entertainment at the Double Tree Hotel. Sign up for the race today!

Proceeds from the race will go to 9-11 related charities, such as the Fisher House Foundation and the Wounded Warriors Project and Operation Purple.  

Get Registered for the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics

The 2010 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics is being held September 18 through September 29. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 1! To be eligible you must be 50 years old by December 31, 2010 and live in a sponsoring jurisdiction, which include the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William, and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church. $10 includes one event and the following events are open:

Track & field, team line dance, racquetball, ten pin bowling, eight ball pool, Wii bowling, bocce, tennis, table tennis, fencing, golf, shuffleboard, chess, miniature golf, bunco, horseshoes, softball hit & throw, backgammon, scrabble, cribbage, yo-yo tricks, duplicate bridge, swimming, diving, pickleball, men’s basketball,  men’s and women’s free throw basketball

The Office of Senior Adult Programs Offers More for Seniors

Arlington’s Office of Senior Adult Programs is offering more activities than ever. In the next few weeks, the center is offering senior employment counseling, senior trips, square dancing, chess groups, Facebook training sessions, a weight loss group called TOPS (take off pounds sensibly), walking groups, Wii Fit groups, piano lessons, line dancing classes, and much more.
