Celebrating the Meaning of the Fourth!

Last night my family and I watched the fireworks. It has long been my feeling that for national holidays such as these, that everything should be closed. July Fourth, Memorial Day, and so on, end up being retail sales days.

I believe people forget the meaning of the actual day, especially children who haven’t really learned the meaning yet. Men and women have died in order to protect our country. As more and more people from different lands come to the United States to live, it is of great importance that they know the meaning of what they are celebrating, and then in turn, can teach their families.

So while we may have celebrated these holidays it is not too late to celebrate what they stand for and to wish the home of the brave and the land of the free a very Happy Birthday.  If you have not already, have this conversation tonight at dinner!

It’s a wonderful time to talk about your family values and the values of our country.

Are You A Weiner, A Whiner, Or A Winner?

Are You A Weiner, A Whiner, Or A Winner?

With more than 14 million Americans currently looking for work, it is definitely a buyer’s market out there.  Companies understandably want to hire the best candidates they can find.  With so many people to choose among, businesses are looking beyond black-and-white credentials such as education and experience to identify prospective employees who bring something more to the table, such as basic common sense.

In this regard, New York Congressman Anthony Weiner’s recent fall from grace should serve as an object lesson for anyone who has a job...and especially for anyone who is seeking a job.

Hit the Trail

Hit the Trail

What would you expect a four-and-three-quarter-year-old to say at the end of a four-and-a-half-mile hike that she just finished using her own two feet? “What a wonderful day,” Sofi announced when we walked past the old Tavern (that I was wishing was still a tavern) at Great Falls National Park.

The Postman and The Pit Bull

The Postman and The Pit Bull

“She is a blessing and has changed my life for the better. Born on my mother’s birthday; I think it was meant to be”. – Reginald Winston

It’s not every day that you hear of a heartwarming story between a postman and a dog, but this one is sure to bring tears to your eyes, especially if you are fortunate enough to meet this destined pair. Piper, a short but sturdy black and white pit bull type dog came to our New York Avenue Shelter in January of this year after being found by a responsive DC resident. She spent some time in the shelter looking for her new family, overlooked as many black and white pit bulls are in shelters. But that would change, after I quickly fell in love with her charm and she was transferred into our foster care program.
