Giving Thanks and Giving Back: 2011 Horton Kids Cocktails and Crooners

November 3, 2011-- Washington, DC.  Thursday night in Washington was all about giving back and giving thanks at the House of Sweden at the "Horton's Kids 2011 Give Thanks Give Back Fundraiser:  Cocktails & Crooners" in Georgetown.  It’s held each year to thank the many volunteer tutors, mentors, board members, and supporters who help enrich the lives of kids that reside in Ward 8 in Washington.

Horton’s Kids is a 501(c)3 mission is to educate and empower the children of Washington, DC’s Ward 8 by providing comprehensive, direct services which improve the quality of their daily lives and nurture their desire and ability to succeed. These services include tutoring and mentoring along with a host of other wrap around services benefiting children the Anacostia neighborhood.

City Square Café of Manassas is gearing up for their Homemade Thanksgiving Dinners-To-Go, preparing dinners to serve 10 guests at $16.99 per guest, and offering a Thanksgiving Day Dinner raffle, where participants drop-off canned goods and enter to win a free Thanksgiving Day dinner-to-go  for eight to 10 people. Raffle entries will be accepted now through Nov. 15. The canned goods will benefit SERVE, a program of Northern Virginia Family Service, dedicated to helping individuals and families find new paths to self-reliance and brighter futures. OLD TOWN MANASSAS SEEKS CONTESTANTS for GINGERBREAD HOUSE COMPETITION

 

 Molasses, ginger, flour, baking soda – just a few of the ingredients you’ll need to get ready for the Gingerbread House Contest in Old Town Manassas this holiday season. Entry forms can be downloaded online at www.visitmanssas.org now through Nov. 18. For 17 years, Historic Manassas, Inc. of Manassas, Va. has displayed the talents of local amateur “architects” in the shop windows of Old Town Manassas during the annual Merry Old Town Manassas holiday festivities.  The public is invited to view the various structures and vote on them in the shops and on-line. Winners will be awarded in two categories, adult and child, with a first-place prize of a $100 Old Town Manassas gift card, second place walks away with a $75 gift card, and third place earns a $50 gift card. A group of employees from fred, a home repair service, participated in the Potomac Day events in Potomac, Maryland on Saturday, October 22, 2011. An ice cream truck wrapped in fred banners that said, "Follow fred - the first name in home repairs - to get your FREE ICE CREAM" followed the fred employees in the parade. The ice cream truck parked close to the fred booth at the business fair and the fred employees gave away 250 free ice cream confections to the people in the community.

Merry Old Town, sponsored by the Manassas Christian School, spreads holiday cheer in Old Town Manassas, Va. with a series of festivities from Fri, Dec. 2 through Sun., Dec. 4. Visitors can enjoy listening to Christmas carolers, greet Santa when he arrives from the train, check-out the tree lighting ceremony with Manassas Mayor Hal Parrish, visit the Manassas museum, see the Greater Manassas Christmas Parade and window shop during the Merchant’s Open House. OLD TOWN MANASSAS FARMER’S MARKET JOINS INOVA HEALTH SYSTEM BUY FRESH, BUY LOCAL

SNAP Recipients Buy $10 in Tokens and Get an Additional $10 Courtesy of Inova

Inova Health System Buy Fresh, Buy Local program, which is part of Inova’s healthy weight management and children’s obesity prevention program, has joined with the Old Town Manassas Farmer’s Market by matching SNAP (Supplemental
Nutrition Assistance Program) funds dollar for dollar up to $10. So if a SNAP recipient buys $10 in tokens, they will get an additional $10 courtesy of Inova. Inova can fund up to $2,000 a year. The program will run now through Sat., Nov. 5, 2011 and Saturdays only from Sat., Nov. 26 through Sat., Mar. 31, 2012.
