Charity Hockey Classic Taps 106.7 The Fan's Sports Junkies Hosts as Special Guest Coaches

From Lane Errington:

ARLINGTON, VA – John “Cakes” Auville and Eric “E.B.” Bickel of 106.7 The Fan’s popular morning drive radio show The Sports Junkies have been selected as special guest coaches for the third annual Charity Hockey Classic, to be held Saturday, September 10 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.  Charity Hockey Classic Chairman Adam Bartholomew made the announcement earlier today.

Auville will join team captain Matt Hendricks of the Washington Capitals on the bench for the Virginia Coaching Cardinals as they seek a second straight title following a 7-3 victory over the NCR Eagles Joint Military squad in 2010.  Bickel’s running mate, Capitals defensemenJeff Schultz, served as captain for the Eagles last year and will assume the same duties for the Booz Allen Minutemen (Booz Allen Hamilton’s corporate ice hockey team) in 2011.  In addition to their coaching duties, Auville and Bickel will also serve as emcees for the intermission entertainment events and will be joining in their teams’ fundraising efforts in support of Inova Blood Donor Services.

The Charity Hockey Classic benefits Inova Blood Donor Services, a service line to the not-for-profit Inova Health System that collects, tests, and provides blood and blood products each day to 17 hospitals and medical centers throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. After raising over $40,000 toward a new value-added testing (VAT) machine at last year’s second annual event, the bar has once again been set for $40,000 in 2011 – which will enable the procurement of this potentially life-saving machine that provides free screening to blood donors for diabetes, cholesterol, and heart disease.

Kettler Capitals Iceplex (home of the Washington Capitals) will host the event from 4:00-7:00pm at its location atop Ballston Common Mall. Other attractions include a silent auction, appearances by local celebrities, ‘Mites on Ice’ youth hockey exhibitions, and the ever-popular ‘chuck-a-duck’ contest.

Inova Blood Donor Services, a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Sterling, VA, also maintains its strong ties to the hockey community as the Official Blood Collection Agency of the Washington Capitals in addition to partnerships with the Washington Wizards, Washington Nationals, George Mason University, and the University of Maryland.
