From Lane Errington:

ARLINGTON, VA – Inova Blood Donor Services will once again ask the local community to “give blood, play hockey” as they host the third annual Charity Hockey Classic, to be contested between the Virginia Coaching Cardinals and Booz Allen Minutemen on Saturday, September 10, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Booz Allen Hamilton’s corporate ice hockey team, the Minutemen, will take the ice in hopes of dethroning the Virginia Coaching Cardinals, last year’s Charity Hockey Classic champions. Returning for a second straight year, this time as special guest captain for the Minutemen, is Capitals defensemen Jeff Schultz.

The Cardinals, a ‘flock’ of youth hockey coaches from across Northern Virginia, handily defeated the NCR Eagles military team in last year’s contest by a score of 7-3 and look to defend their title in 2011. The Cardinals roster includes coaches from local youth hockey programs including the Ashburn Xtreme, Reston Raiders, Virginia Wild, NoVA Ice Dogs, Prince William Panthers, and Washington Little Caps. The Cardinals will be captained by Washington Capitals center and special guest Matt Hendricks.

The beneficiary of the Charity Hockey Classic is once again Inova Blood Donor Services, a service line to the not-for-profit Inova Health System that collects, tests, and provides blood and blood products each day to 15 hospitals and medical centers throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. In 2010, the event raised over $40,000 toward a new value-added testing (VAT) machine for Inova Blood Donor Service. This machine provides free screening to blood donors for diabetes, cholesterol, and heart disease. The goal for 2011 has been set to raise another $40,000 to finish the job started with last year’s game and purchase this potentially life-saving machine.

“The third edition of the Charity Hockey Classic promises to be another spirited day of competition and charitable giving by the local hockey community,” said Charity Hockey Classic Chairman Adam Bartholomew. “We are thrilled to have Booz Allen Hamilton and all this year’s partners joining in our mission to provide a safe and adequate blood supply to the entire DC metro area.”

Kettler Capitals Iceplex (home of the Washington Capitals) will host the event from 4:00-7:00pm at its location atop Ballston Common Mall. Other attractions and game entertainment include a silent auction, appearances by local celebrities, ‘Mites on Ice’ youth hockey exhibitions, and the ever-popular ‘chuck-a-duck’ contest.

Inova Blood Donor Services, a 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in Sterling, VA, also maintains its strong ties to the hockey community as the Official Blood Collection Agency of the Washington Capitals in addition to partnerships with the Washington Wizards, Washington Nationals, George Mason University, and the University of Maryland.
