The Y Spreads Holiday Cheer Around the Metro Area

The Salvation Army Begins Toys Distribution

The Salvation Army Begins Toys Distribution

Today was an exciting and hectic day at the Salvation Army at 518 South Glebe Road in Arlington, VA. The center was crowded with volunteers and families picking up their toys and presents. Today and tomorrow mark the culmination of the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign because gifts are being distributed to those families in need. The Campaign allows the Army to provide food, toys, and clothing to more than 6 million people during this time of year; it is the Salvation’s Army biggest fundraiser.

There was joy and celebration in the air and Captain Vance Murphy, the Arlington Corps Officer, said, “This is what we do, and this is what we love to do.” All the hard work over the past few weeks really pays off on these last two days when the Salvation Army can assist parents in bringing the joy of Christmas to children in homes in need.

Bladensburg:  presenting gifts to about 30 children at Langley Elementary School on Friday, Dec. 17.

Landover: Hosting a holiday celebration for 16 underprivileged children from Glenarden Wood Elementary School at the Landover Bus Division at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17. Metro employees will be providing items from the children’s wish list.  There also will be food and games at the celebration.
