Metropolitan School of the Arts Opens New Black Box Theatre

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria Va. recently revealed its newly constructed Black Box Theatre, perfect for intimate dance, music and theatre performances, seating 130. Costing $140,000 to build, MSA received an anonymous gift of $60,000 to help with the cost of the theatre. Go to www.metropolitanarts.org for more information.

“We are the only Alexandria performing arts space to offer this type of theater for public use in Alexandria,” said Melissa Dobbs, founder and executive director of Metropolitan School of the Arts of Alexandria, Va. “Other performing arts groups can also take advantage of this space through rental options, as we encourage more performing arts opportunities in the greater Alexandria area,” said Dobbs.

Metro School of the Arts’ Jacob Anderson on Nat'l Tour of Roald Dahl’s U.S. Tour of Matilda

Jacob Anderson, 11, a student at Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria Va., is making his national tour debut in the U.S. National Tour of Matilda The Musical. Produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Dodgers, the blockbuster musical named TIME Magazine’s #1 Show of the Year, is on tour in select U.S. cities, now through June 25, 2017.  Anderson of Fairfax Station, Va. plays the part of Nigel Hicks in the U.S. National Tour of Matilda the Musical. Metropolitan School Of The Arts’ Tap Ensemble Presents Preview Show, Mar. 12

Metropolitan School of the Arts Youth Tap Ensemble is performing a preview to its 10-year anniversary show, scheduled in May, called 2x2, at MSA’s Black Box Theatre at 5775 Barclay Drive in Alexandria, Va. Tickets are $5 per child, $10 per adult. Tap students perform duets that are choreographed and performed by more than 20 tap artists. For more tickets, go to www.metropolitanarts.org.

Wil Haygood, author and associate producer of the blockbuster film, The Butler, will present at BASIS Independent McLean on Fri., Mar. 10 from 6:30 pm to 8 p.m., to talk about writing and how his work launched him onto the world stage. The event is free and open to public, located at 8000 Jones Branch Drive in McLean, Va. Haygood will also be available for a book signing, as his two books will be available for sale; The Butler and his latest book, Showdown, which chronicles the battle of the Supreme Court nomination of Thurgood Marshall. Metropolitan School Of The Arts Student, James Woods, To Head To Catholic University For Music Educa

James Woods, 18, of Alexandria, Va., and senior at Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria Va. was selected by The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. to study music education, in the fall of 2017. Not only is he finishing up his high school studies at MSA, Woods worked as the music director for Aldersgate Community Children’s Theater (ACCT) with Elf Jr. and is also employed by the Educational Theatre Company of Arlington, Va.
