Chunk of Debris Found Near Ground Zero Could Be Part of 9/11 Plane: Sources

(CBS) -- A 5-foot-long chunk of airplane debris found near the World Trade Center site is believed to be a piece of landing gear from one of the planes that hit the towers more than 11 years ago, NBC 4 New York first reported.

Police confirmed Friday that the part was found wedged between two buildings in a very narrow alley between the rear of 50 Murray St. and back of 51 Park Place, the site where a mosque and community center has been proposed three blocks from ground zero.

The part bears a "Boeing" stamp, followed by a series of numbers.

NYPD said the landing gear was found after surveyors hired by the property owner inspecting the rear of 51 Park Place called police on Wednesday.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said officials have secured the location "as it would a crime scene," and investigators are photographing the scene and restricting access until the medical examiner completes a health and safety evaluation.

Publisher, photographer probed over topless Kate photos

PARIS (AP) - French prosecutors have placed the publisher and photographer of unauthorized topless snaps of Prince William's wife, Kate, under formal criminal investigation, they said Thursday.

Caroline Chassain, spokeswoman for the Nanterre prosecutor, said that Mondadori Magazines France and local photographer Valerie Suau were placed under investigation earlier this month over possible criminal exploitation of the images, which appeared in the French Closer magazine last September.

The photos showed the duchess of Cambridge relaxing at a private villa in Provence, in southern France, sometimes without her bikini top and, in one case, her suit bottom partially pulled down to apply sunscreen.

Chassain added that Suau's employer, local newspaper La Provence, was also placed under formal criminal investigation on Monday, but she did not elaborate.

The investigation will likely take months to complete.

Arlington Man Runs 78.6 Miles for Boston Marathon Bombing Victims

ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9) -- Frank Fumich is a take action kind of guy. He and his wife Chelsea, their Great Dane Winston and their adorable 3-year-old twin girls live in Arlington.

But much of the time, Frank is running. He's an ultra distance runner and will run about two marathons a month. After the bombings, he knew he had to do something.

"I thought how easily that could have been Chelsea and the girls waiting at the finish line. And that happened to them. So I just wanted to honor them and raise money at the same time," said Fumich.

He and Chelsea were particularly saddened by the death of little Martin Richard.

MARCHING BOBCATS TO STORM NORMANDY IN 2014

MARCHING BOBCATS TO STORM NORMANDY IN 2014

A nine-time Virginia Honor Band, the Battlefield High School Marching Bobcats have been selected as one of only six U.S. high school marching bands to participate in the first-ever commemorative D-Day parade on its 70th Anniversary in Normandy, France, in June 2014.

On June 6, 1944, Allied forces crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, to liberate Western Europe from the occupation of Nazi Germany. Seventy years later on June 6, 2014, Sainte-Mere-Eglise, the first village liberated by American paratroopers, will host a historic parade. Military units, marching bands, along with cultural and civic groups will march down the same streets that were lined with American troops in 1941. Dignitaries and military officials from the United States, Canada, and all across Europe will attend. The President of the United States, cabinet members, and officials representing all branches of the Armed Forces will also be present.

Obama: Boston capture closes chapter in tragedy

WASHINGTON (AP/WUSA*9) - President Barack Obama says the capture of a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing closes what he calls "an important chapter in this tragedy."

Obama spoke from the White House briefing room shortly after law enforcement took 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev into custody in a boat in a Watertown, Mass., neighborhood. His older brother was killed earlier Friday in an attempt to escape police.

Obama says the nation owes a debt of gratitude to law enforcement officials and the people of Boston for their help in the search for the men.
